“的”字表达面面观
英语中“的”的表达常用名词所有格来表示，但在平时的英语学习中，我们还会遇到其他形式表示所属关系。笔者现略作归纳如下：
一、“ 's ”作前置定语
用以修饰有生命事物的名词。具体使用规则如下：
1. 单数名词和不以 s 结尾的复数名词后加“ 's ”。
the children's palace 少年宫
Women's Day 妇女节
2. 以 s 结尾的复数名词后加“ ' ”。
the elephants' trunks 象牙
the students' books 学生用书
3. 在复合名词或短语的最后一个词后加“ 's ”。
my father-in-law's company 我岳父的公司
someone else's opinion 别人的意见
4. 并列名词表示各自所属时，两个名词后均须加“ 's ”；若表示共同所属，则在最后一个名词后加“ 's ”。
Nancy's and Linda's grandfather 南希的爷爷和琳达的爷爷
Nancy and Linda's grandfather 南希和琳达的爷爷
5. 句中有同位语时，在同位语后加“ 's ”。
Her best girlfriend， Jeanne's necklace.
她最好的女友——让娜的项链。
6. 店铺、家、诊所、餐馆等后加“ 's ”，可省略其后的名词。
the hair dresser's 美发厅
at Smith's 在史密斯家
at the dentist's 在牙医诊所
at his aunt's 在他婶婶家
7. 时间、距离、集体、城市、国家、团体、机构等名词后和某些习惯用语中加“ 's ”。
tomorrow's science 未来科学
half an hour's ride 骑车半小时的路程
Tokyo's agriculture 日本的农业
the school's history 校史
at arm's length 以一臂之距
at a stone's throw 近在咫尺
二、 of 作后置定语
1. 用以修饰无生命事物的名词。
the proof of this theory 这个理论的证据
the writer of comedies 喜剧作家
2. 用在有生命物体的名词较长或修饰语较多时。
the meaning of this English word 这个英语单词的意思
the name of the naughty boy seated in the middle of the classroom 坐在教室中间的那
个淘气的男孩儿的名字
三、“ 's ”＋ of 作后置定语
为了避免名词的重复、加强语气或表示某种感情色彩。
1. of 前须有一限定词（如 a ， any ， some ， no ， few ， several ， two ， three 等）。
Have you read any novels of Dicken's？
你看过狄更斯的小说吗？
2. 主体名词可用 this ， that 等指示代词来表示某种感情色彩。
That novel of Mark Twain's was interesting.
马克。吐温的那部小说很有趣。
3. of 后带“ 's ”的表示具体的人或相当于名词性物主代词。
That's a play of Shakespear's.
这是莎士比亚的一个剧本。
四、 to 作后置定语
用以修饰没有隶属关系的名词。
the entrance to the valley 山谷的入口。
the answer sheet to this English paper
这份英语试卷的答题纸
五、 with 作后置定语
用以修饰问题、麻烦或困惑之类的名词。
The problem with tobacco is that it contains a drug called nicotine.
烟草的问题是它含有一种叫尼古丁的麻醉剂。
六、 for 作后置定语
用以修饰某项奖的具体分项奖。
In 1904， Marie and Pierre Curie were given the Nobel Prize for physics.
1904 年居里夫妇获得了诺贝尔物理奖。
