B Early Canada
In 1497, an Italian John Cabot set out in an English ship, the Mathew, to find a western route(路线) to Asia. Instead he discovered a region that would one day form part of Canada. The waters around Cabot's "Newfoundland" were full of fish that could be caught in baskets lowered over the ship's sides. Cabot and his men were overjoyed, of course.
Though the region was discovered by Cabot, throughout the 16th century fishermen from England, France, Spain, and Portugal came in ever-growing numbers to fish in Newfoundland's waters. The French and English set up their bases on shore. They salted and dried the cod, a kind of fish, so that it wouldn't spoil on the long voyage to Europe. French fishing stations spread(延伸) out toward the Gulf of St. Lawrence. The English managed to stay in eastern Newfoundland, and finally Sir Humphrey Gilbert, an English explorer, made it part for the Crown in 1583.
