在这个世界上，水是特别常见的一样事物，它美好而富有魅力。水最大的特性之一就是在于它是没有形状的，它是随形随流的。可是，当水在水杯里的时候，就能够得到截然相反的结论——它呈现出了具体的水杯的形状。同样，如果把水放到了盒子里，它便呈现出了盒子的形状。
很大意义上，词汇完全具备这样的“水性”。词汇难以掌握很大程度是因为它这样的水性，或者用专业的术语，既称为“一词多义”或“熟词僻义”。严格意义上来讲，一个单词单独拿出来没有任何含义，而只有把它放到某一上下文或某一语境之中，才有一个具体意义的产生。不同的上下文让同一个词汇产生了不同的含义，而这样不同的上下文就相当于把水构筑成不同形状的容器了。
